Trailer: The Hypnotic Melancholy of Aftersun, The First Sensitive Film To Be Oscar-Nominated

This first feature film by Scottish director Charlotte Wells won two awards at the last Deauville festival. Its main actor, Paul Mescal, created a surprise by being nominated for the best actor Oscar, which will be awarded on March 12.

It is the story of a melancholic woman, Sophie, a British woman in her thirties, who remembers a precise moment in her childhood when, at the age of 12, she went to Turkey alone with her father, Calum. By then he is middle aged, not really a child anymore, not quite a teenager. He wistfully replays the film of this summer vacation in the sun, the wonderful moments, the general joy, but also the disagreements.

These 1990s are now far away and memories are less accurate. The amateur images captured by the camera are fragile on the idea she has of this father, like a wound that still threatens today. Sophie is looking for answers, she would like to know the true identity of this man who remains a mystery to her. This is also the portrait of a teenager who discovers the first feelings of love.

Amazing and mysterious

With great sensitivity, this first feature film by Scottish director Charlotte Wells is one of the most anticipated independent films of the year. Inspired by autobiography, it gently evokes the delicate theme of mourning and memory, the father-daughter relationship in a surprising, sometimes even mysterious narrative.

Presented at this year’s Cannes Critics’ Week, after the sun it also won the Deauville American Film Festival Grand Prize and the Critics Award. Paul Mescal, who plays the father, created a surprise by being nominated for the best actor Oscar for this role. It was released in theaters on February 1.
