British actor Julian Sands, known for his work in films such as “A Room With a View” and “Snakehead,” has been identified as one of two hikers recently reported missing in California’s San Gabriel Mountains.
Authorities are also separately searching for another hiker, Hawthorne resident Bob Gregory, whose family reported him missing Monday, according to ABC News.
Sands was reported missing Friday in Mt. Baldy, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department told the Los Angeles Times. Ground personnel immediately began searching the area, but had to stop on Saturday because of the avalanche risk and unsafe runway conditions, a department spokesman said. However, aerial searches continued with helicopters and drones. Ground searches will resume when conditions improve.
Sands was located in the Baldy Bowl hiking area, about 50 miles east of Los Angeles, Variety reported.
The actor has dozens of film and television credits, including “Warlock,” “Leaving Las Vegas,” “Smallville,” “Arachnophobia” and “Naked Lunch.”
A representative for the actor did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department issued a Hazardous Winter Weather Advisory for Mount Baldy Wednesday morning. Its search and rescue teams have responded to 14 rescue missions in the area in the past four weeks for lost, stranded or injured hikers.
“Please know that the current conditions on Mount Baldy are adverse and extremely dangerous,” the alert said. “Due to strong winds, the snow turned to ice, making hiking extremely dangerous. Sheriff’s search and rescue efforts are often hampered by inclement weather and dangerous avalanche conditions.”
