The “Late Night” host noted that in the November midterms, Kevin McCarthy and his fellow Republicans exclaimed what they predicted would be a landslide victory for the party that would give them a large majority in the House.
It did not happen. And in the new Congress, with only a narrow Republican majority and a dissident bloc within his own party, McCarthy was forced to make concessions and endure 15 rounds of voting before he could take office as speaker.
“For at least a year until the midterms, McCarthy was incredibly secretive about this, even giving us accurate numbers about how many seats the Republicans could win,” Meyers said.
In a clip last April, McCarthy was asked on Fox News if perhaps Republicans were a little “overconfident this year.” McCarthy said they are not.
“It’s going to be a historic red tide or my name isn’t Klevin McCorthy,” Meyers joked. “It’s never a good sign when someone says they’re not very sure of themselves. If a character says that in the movie, they’re about 10 minutes away from being eaten by a T. rex.”
