What happens in ‘Avatar’?
The feature film that revolutionized the way computer graphics were used in cinematographic productions is set in the year 2154, and begins the plot with the narration of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic former Marine recruited by the Resources Development Administration corporation, the RDA, to help find ways to explore the alien planet Pandora, and extract a precious ore called Unobtainium.
It is worth remembering that Pandora is inhabited by a species of humanoids called Na’vi, blue beings with a tail that are considered primitive by humans. They stand nearly 10 feet tall, and their bones are naturally reinforced with carbon fiber — and they also have a strong bond with nature.
In the logbook, Jake says that he accepted to be part of the project because, with the remuneration, he could pay for an operation that would make him walk again. In addition to revealing that he was chosen, because, in addition to being a marine and being able to fight in the field, he is the twin brother of Thomas, one of the scientists who were part of the Avatar project.
Thomas, however, ended up passing away. Thus, he became the only one with compatible genetic material to control his brother’s Avatar and proceed with the mission without delays and new expenses, since producing an Avatar takes time and a lot of investment.
An Avatar is a genetically engineered human-Na’vi hybrid linked to its human counterpart through neural connections that allow control of the Avatar’s body. This being was created to allow humans to circulate around Pandora without the aid of oxygen masks, since the place is rich in carbon dioxide, methane and ammonia, not allowing earthlings to breathe normally.
With that in mind, Thomas enters Pandora alongside Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) and biologist Norm Spellman (Joel David Moore), where he ends up getting lost from the duo after being attacked by one of the local animal giants.
As a result, Jake is left behind and ends up at the mercy of the place, having his life endangered by a pack of viper wolves until he is saved by Neytiri (Zoë Saldaña), a Na’vi who decides to help him after he is covered in seeds of Utral Aymokria, the Tree of Souls that carries the voices of the ancestors.
Despite being reluctant at first, Neytiri takes Jake to the Home Tree, the home of the Omaticaya, one of the people of Pandora, and the place that accumulates the most reserves of Unobtainium. There, Jake begins the process of being accepted as part of the community, where he learns the locale better, learns the mother tongue of Pandora, and even gains the confidence to command a “Na’vi Ikran”, a type of dragon on the planet. .
While winning the trust of the Na’Vi, Jake passes on the new information he discovers about Pandora to the RDA humans, who, after three months collecting the data provided by the former marine, decide to attack the Tree-Home in order to remove the precious ore. .
However, Jake ended up understanding the importance of the place and that culture, in addition to having become attached to the tribe members and falling in love with Neytiri, thus, he ended up becoming against the exploitation of Pandora and sided with the Omaticaya.
Still, the decision was taken too late. The alien planet was attacked, the Home-Tree was destroyed and the local people lost everything, except their connection with nature, which became indispensable to win the next battles with humans.
In addition, despite Jake having broken the trust of the Na’Vi, he managed to recover it, since determined to save the place, he ended up becoming the fifth warrior to assume the mantle of Totuk Makto, the only one capable of uniting several clans. on Pandora.
Thus, after several struggles, the inhabitants of the planet located 4.4 light years from Earth ended up winning the war and expelling humans from Pandora. Finally, the plot ends with Jake transferring his human consciousness to the Avatar body, starting to live then, only as a Na’Vi and no longer as an earthling.
