They may not belong to the famous group of characters, but they are still legitimate princesses.
Disney currently has 12 official princesses who are part of the lucrative and beloved Disney Princesses franchise. They are: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida and Moana.
To be chosen by the select group, the characters need to fit five important rules stipulated by the studio: to be part of an animation; to be human or at least half human; being born a princess, marrying royalty, or committing a heroic act; being the lead in her own movie (other than a sequel); and give a good economic return to the studios.
However, in addition to these twelve big names, Disney also has a huge list of unofficial princesses who, for various reasons, ended up not making it into the Disney Princess group. Meet some!
1. Mia Thermopolis
In “The Princess Diaries”, Mia ends up fulfilling the dream of many people around the world: to become a princess overnight. Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi is the direct heir to the kingdom of Genovia, granddaughter of Queen Carisse Renaldi. Despite being a legitimate princess, Mia is not part of an animation, besides becoming queen in the second film. Therefore, she is not part of the Disney Princesses.
2. melody

Melody is the granddaughter of King Triton, daughter of Princess Ariel and Prince Eric, being a legitimate princess of both the aquatic and terrestrial worlds. She ended up not joining her mother in the select group because she was the protagonist of a sequel, the film The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea, released in 2000.
3. Megara

In Greek mythology, Megara is a princess as she is the daughter of Creon, the king of Thebes. In the film Hercules, however, her title was never confirmed. However, she ends up receiving the honor by marrying the main character through the “Hercules” series. For not being the protagonist and getting married only during the series, Megara came to be considered only as an unofficial Disney princess.
4. Vanellope Von Schweetz

In the Wreck-It Ralph franchise, we learn that Vanellope is the princess from the Sugar Rush game that ended up being erased from programming and became a bug. In the second film, she even gets to meet the other 12 members of the Disney Princesses, who recognize her as a real princess. The only problem is that Disney itself still doesn’t consider her as an official princess.
5. Ting Ting, Su and Mei

The three daughters of the Emperor of China play an important role in the second Mulan movie. Despite being extremely charismatic and legitimate princesses, they only appear in one sequence and are not the main characters of the production.
