New Year’s Eve is also a milestone day for Harry Potter fans. In history, on December 31, 1926, Tom Marvolo Riddle was born, better known in the future as Lord Voldemort, the great Lord of Darkness.
To celebrate the 95th birthday of one of pop culture’s most iconic villains, check out these 5 fun facts about the character.
1. Name inspired by a real person
The author J.K. Rowling took into account numerous real-life situations for his works — and one of them is the names of some characters. According to information from the BBC, the writer was inspired by names she found in the Greyfriars Kirk cemetery in Scotland. Among them were Thomas Riddle, Minerva McGonagall, Alastor Moody and Rufus Scrimgeour.
2. Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher?
Before becoming Lord Voldemort, Tom Riddle tried to be Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts twice, but ended up being rejected both times. Therefore, he ended up cursing the position where he prevented anyone from remaining in the position for more than a year.
3. Meaning of Voldemort
In French, “Vol de mort” means “theft of death”. The word ends up making a great reference to the character’s own history who, through the Horcruxes, uses the death of other people to prolong his life.
4. Another name for Death Eaters
For very little, the Death Eaters, a group of followers of the Dark Lord, did not gain another name. Second J.K. Rowlingoriginally, they should have been called the Knights of Walpurgis.
5. He wasn’t the only bad one in the family
It wasn’t just Voldemort and Salazar Slytherin who had a huge fascination with “pure blood”. According to the website Game Rant, Gormlaith Gaunt, Riddle’s cousin, also hated Muggles and “Mudblood” wizards, that is, those born Muggles. Her contempt would be such that the woman would have taken the lives of her sister and brother-in-law just for showing sympathy for non-magical beings.
