Robin Roberts reveals she and Amber Laign plan to tie the knot this year

Robin Roberts’ plans for 2023 include a trip down the corridor.

The “Good Morning America” co-host announced Monday that she and longtime friend Amber Laign plan to tie the knot this year.

“I hesitate because I haven’t said it out loud yet,” Roberts told author and motivational speaker Gabby Bernstein during a discussion about setting intentions. “I say yes to marriage.” We are getting married this year.”

Roberts publicly acknowledged her relationship with Laign on social media in 2013. The two women have been dating since 2005.

In their conversation Monday, Roberts told Bernstein that she and Laign, a massage therapist in San Francisco, “previously talked about [getting married], but I put it off. He was sick.”

While Roberts hasn’t confirmed a date or other details about the upcoming ceremony, he did note, “She’s saying yes to that chapter and the next chapter.”

Laign was diagnosed with breast cancer in late 2021 and completed radiation treatment last July.

Roberts, a breast cancer survivor, spoke at length about Laign’s diagnosis in a 2022 appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

“I’ve been there twice, he only shed one tear,” he said at the time. “I’m in a puddle every time I think about what Amber is going through. But she’s so brave and she’s doing really well.”

In the same interview, Roberts also revealed that she almost backed out of an interview with former President Barack Obama a decade ago because she was afraid of being outed as gay.

“I got a call to go to the White House,” he explained. “There is a possibility that [Obama] it would change their position on marriage equality. I hadn’t come out as gay yet, and I was afraid of being picked on, that people might ask, “Why are they interviewing the president when he’s making this change in his position?”

However, after considering the overall impact of the interview, Roberts ultimately agreed to participate.

“It was kind of like a ‘Moonstruck’ scene,” he said. “Stop it, Robin! What are you thinking about? It’s not about you. This man will affect countless lives. And in that moment I said, “I’m going to stop letting fear stop me from doing the things I want to do.”
