in an interview with Teen VogueThe official makeup artists for the Netflix series wednesday reveal their method of recreating the heroine’s “soft goth” bare lips.
Wednesday Adams’ “soft goth” aesthetic continues to inspire beauty trends. After her braided hairstyle was massively copied on social media, now it’s her makeup that’s grabbing all the attention. The proof. The theme “Wednesday Adams Makeup” (in English: “Wednesday Adams Makeup”) shows more than 21 billion views on the TikTok counter, where video messages reproducing her beauty accumulate.
Faced with this craze, two regular makeup artists on the Netflix series have revealed some of the secrets to recreating the exact same look as Jenna Ortega’s character. British professional make-up artist Tara Macdonald specifically revealed the instructions given by Tim Burton himself for preparing Wednesday’s look. “[Il] didn’t want dramatic gothic makeup. The brief was to create more of a goth girl everyday look, so my first thought was: [de faire] a kind of “lips that have just been bitten,” he says in a recent interview with an American magazine. Teen Vogue .
After two weeks of trying different colors on the actress’ mouth, the team finally settled on a very specific product duo. On one hand, MAC Cosmetics lip pencil in the shade Nightmoth (on a nude brown), on the other hand, Dr PawPaw Multipurpose Balm. So this combination made it possible to get a simple translucent “paint” rather than a very pigmented and clear result.
“Lip pot” technique
In addition to careful product selection, a special application method was also necessary to preserve the heroine’s “naturally gothic” aspect. To do this, British artist Nirvana Jalalvand, another official make-up artist on the set, invented what she calls the ‘lip pot technique’. “Lip liners are hard to work with (…) and I couldn’t find a lipstick color that matched the liner,” she says in the interview, before her tip to “produce”. [son] own lipstick.
The specialist equipped himself with an empty small pot. She crushed the tip of a MAC pencil and put the shards into the container before adding a bit of clear lip balm and mixing it all together to dilute the pigments. Then he made sure that the material was applied evenly;[Le mélange] was painted to look like paint rather than to provide perfect definition,” he adds.

Glamor version
In Wednesday Adams’ famous dance scene that has gone viral on social media, the lead character is lip-syncing this time with bright highlights. It’s also the only time in the series’ eight episodes that this sad character indulges in this touch of fantasy. To show that the young girl “put in a little more effort” to reach the ball, the make-up artists created a shiny effect on her mouth. “We used the same lip liner, but put on Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream Balm because it’s really moisturizing and holds its shine well,” continues Nirvana Jalalvand.
The two artists also amped up Wednesday’s eye makeup by creating a smoker eye and adding individual false lashes. Inspired by our 2023 Halloween costumes to remember?
