A few weeks ago, the Lima Chamber of Commerce calculated that small and medium businesses they billed around S$13 billion for this Christmas campaign, but the new panorama of protests and political crisis overshadows those predictions.
Now a guild United Maypes from Peru warns that the crisis is jeopardizing 15% of this year’s Christmas sales.
Director of the MYPE Research Center Daniel Hermosa notes that various sectors in regions such as Arequipa, Trujillo, Chiclayo and Tacna, sales have suffered since last week’s failed coup.
“The impact that we are seeing at the moment is quite strong. About 15% may fall, and the intention to buy gifts that are usually given at Christmas falls, because the whole world with this tension turns into toilet paper. and food, because the threat of road closures creates the feeling that there might be some kind of a lack of in the coming days,” he told RPP.
A mypes spokesperson points out that, taking into account the revenue forecast for this Christmas campaign, they will lose about S/1.950 million.
Hermosa notes that one of sectors production would suffer the most.
“In general, the problem with road blocking, rather than the impact on the production process, is that it discourages consumption. There are machines and factories in the manufacturing sector, in the service sector, primarily in trade, they are malleable to demand, they adapt to the needs of the market, on the other hand, the process of diversification of the producer is slower when consumption is discouraged, they are the most affected sectors,” – he specified.
Micro and small companies warn they are concerned about the situation because this campaign is the most important of the year, and they hoped that the income generated will allow them to survive in the first months of 2023.
” Christmas Campaign This is the most important year and it is the one that gives oxygen to companies to survive during the first three months of the year, which are a bit lazy before the school campaign, which we don’t know what will also happen, we live from crisis to crisis,” he adds .
Similarly, it indicates that the crisis scenario increases the over-indebtedness that affects mypes and the likelihood that employment will not improve in 2023.
A union spokesman argues that since mipes has not yet reached its pre-pandemic levels and the crisis continues to deepen, they hope the government and Congress will at least implement Contingency Plan for Mypes deal with the situation.
