Despite inflation, one in five French people plan to go skiing this winter

Inflation does not stop the French from skiing. One in five (19%) intend to get some fresh air in the mountains this winter, according to a recent OpinionWay survey for Ginkoia*, a publisher of sports business software.

As last year, winter sports remain an inexplicable event for the FrenchGinkoia CEO Thierry Briet was quoted as saying in the press release. The proportion of French people who plan to spend their holidays in the mountains is indeed stable compared to last year (-1 point). Out of this 19%, 6% have already made their reservation. And this despite persistent concerns about household purchasing power.

First time“, the barometer also points out, the French seem to prefer Christmas this year for skiing. Among those who want to practice winter sports, 30% plan to leave during this period (+9 points compared to 2021), in 2023 against 23% during the winter holidays in February-March (-1 point). The average length of stay remains stable at about a week (8 days this year compared to 7 days in 2021).

Another elementhigh-altitude ski resorts will be more popular this year (+2 points), while low-altitude resorts are losing interest among respondents (-9 points)“, – it is mentioned in the study. Skiing also remains a favorite activity among mountain vacationers (75%), although snowmobiling (65%) and sledding (62%) also remain popular activities.

Inflation worries skiers

This study heralds a good season for winter sports resorts. The National Association of Mountain Resort Mayors (NAMA) also wants to be optimistic. “The first trends for the upcoming winter season are encouraging at the momentits president Jean-Luc Bloch said last week. The National Mountain Resorts Observatory expects a 7% increase in forecasted resort occupancy throughout the upcoming season.

Nevertheless, the French will not leave with a light mind. Blame it on the uncertain economic context and concerns about purchasing power. Eight out of ten vacationers (81%)”.want to change their consumption habits to cope with rising prices“. 29% of them admit they will compare prices more, 28% will be careful to respect their budget, and 25% even say they will spend less on leisure activities such as excursions or restaurants. We can already expect an increase in the prices of ski tickets, warns the Armenian National Sports Association.will grow between 5 and 8%“Indeed said Jean-Luc Bloch last week.

*Opinion Way survey for Ginkoia conducted from October 12 to 14, 2022 through an online questionnaire administered to a sample of 1,972 people in the French population aged 18 and over, formed according to quota methods according to gender criteria. , age, socio-professional category, urban area category and region of residence.
