Society for Foreign TradeComex Peru), pointed out that textile export and apparel between January and August this year totaled $1,276 million, up 32.7% from the same period in 2021 ($962 million).
“These results mean that pre-pandemic levels have been significantly exceeded,” he stressed.
Exports of textiles and clothing for the same period in 2019, before the start of the pandemic, amounted to $918 million.
In addition, he mentioned that the textile and clothing sector is an important source of employment and income for the country, and shipments abroad from this sector account for 3% of total exports.
Comex Peru explained that among the main textile products exported during the period, “Other Cotton T-shirts” worth $148 million (up 50.4%) stand out, accounting for 11.6% of the sector’s total exports.
Next comes plain cotton T-shirts worth $132 million (up 22.2% and accounting for 10.3% of total exports). In turn, knitted T-shirts and T-shirts made from other textile materials achieved sales of $66 million.
Carded or combed fine alpaca or llama wool also stands out, with an export value of $55 million (a 25.7% increase), accounting for 4.3% of the sector’s exports.
Finally, knitted shirts made from other synthetic or man-made fibers reached $41 million (up 91.8% and accounting for 3.7% of the total).
By region
When disaggregated by regions, Lima is positioned as the main textile exporterwith $903 million between January and August this year (70.8% of the total), also up 37% from the $659 million recorded in the same analysis period in 2021.
It is followed by Ica with $153 million, up 31.8% and 12% participation; and Arequipa, $138 million (up 1.1% from the same period in 2021, and they represent 10.8% of the total).
Target Markets
Growth textile export and apparel from Peru was driven by higher demand from its main trading partners. Thus, the value of exports to the United States, the main destination of textile supplies (54% of the total), reached a total of $689 million between January and August 2022, up 35.9% from the same period in 2021.
Among our main products sent to said market, other cotton T-shirts worth $102 million stood out, up 61.8% from 2021; plain cotton T-shirts ($83 million; up 10.6%); and knit and other textile t-shirts ($59 million; up 26.3%).
Chile was next in this ranking of export destinations with $77 million, up 34.3% from the same period in 2021, and with a 6.1% share of total exports. Similarly, Columbia follows with $60 million; Ecuador with $45 million; and Canada with $44 million.
