The Ukrainian gas transportation system is ready for various situations in the absence of transit.
The GTS operator of Ukraine has prepared different scenarios for the operation of the gas delivery system, depending on the situation next winter. This was said by the head of the company Sergey Makogon in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine, published on Wednesday, August 31.

“The lack of transit does not cause insurmountable technical problems for the Ukrainian GTS. Although it will be difficult. Our system has already switched to reverse mode in 2006, 2009 and 2019, when Gazprom stopped the transit. We have different situations of actions and decisions that will be applied during the heating season, depending on the situation,” he said.
Makogon noted that the reduction of Russian gas pumping through Ukraine’s GTS below the contractual level makes it possible to make the reservation necessary for the transition to the gas transportation process, or apply non- standard solution to supply gas to Ukrainian consumers and fulfill transit duties.
“We have prepared all the reverse schemes, we are carrying out targeted work on specific parts of the gas delivery system, we are carrying out monthly training of personnel in responding to emergencies and emergency situations,” giving Makogon emphasized.
He noted that the presence of transit Ukraine guarantees the integrity of the main gas pipelines. “If a political decision is made at the Kremlin level to stop transit to the EU through Ukraine, there is a risk that our gas transportation infrastructure will be partially destroyed by the aggressor. This will also create problems for transportation in within Ukraine, because we have a single GTS for transit and local transport,” – explained the head of the OGTSU.
The authorities are also engaged in determining the capacities that will not be used for the transfer of gas in any situation after 2024 and are subject to liquidation or conservation.
It should be noted that by the end of August, Ukraine had accumulated 13 billion cubic meters of gas against the government’s plan of 19 billion cubic meters.
