Moscow explained the stoppage of supplies by the fact that at the end of July, Western sanctions against Russia prevented the payment of transit fees to Ukraine.
Russian oil deliveries to the Czech Republic through the southern section of the Druzhba pipeline in transit through Ukraine have resumed after a break that lasted more than a week. “The supplies resumed at 20:00,” a spokesman for Mero, the owner and operator of the Czech section of the Druzhba oil pipeline, told AFP on Friday evening.
Czech Minister of Industry and Trade Józef Sikela said earlier that his country has found a way to pay oil transit fees.
The Russian operator of the pipeline, Transneft, announced on August 9 that oil supplies through Ukraine were cut off on August 4. Moscow explained this by the fact that at the end of July, Western sanctions against in Russia the payment of transit fees to Ukraine. In addition to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary suffered.
Slovak oil company Slovnaft and its Hungarian parent company MOL then offered to pay transit fees for a section of the pipeline through Ukraine. Both Ukrainian and Russian sides agreed. Deliveries resumed in Slovakia on August 10 and in Hungary on August 11. The Czech Republic negotiated on its own behalf and now the problem has also been resolved.
In April, EU countries agreed to gradually introduce an oil embargo against Russia as part of the sixth round of sanctions. Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, however, have sought a long-term exemption from the EU embargo on Russian oil imports through the Druzhba pipeline, citing their heavy reliance on Russian supplies.
It was previously reported that starting from September this year, Kazakhstan intends to sell part of its oil bypassing Russia – through Azerbaijan’s largest oil pipeline. According to the International Energy Agency, the Russian Federation lost two billion dollars in revenue from oil exports a month.
