WASHINGTON (AP) – Former President Donald Trump backed Mehmed Oz in the crowded Pennsylvania Senate primary, ending a month -long joke in his support.
In a statement Saturday, Trump said his decision was “all about winning the election” as he supported a famous heart surgeon known as the host of the day’s “Dr. Ozzy Show” TV show.
“The great Pennsylvania community has a huge opportunity to save America by electing the brilliant and famous Dr. Mehmed Oz to the United States Senate,” Trump said in part. “Dr. Oz is smart, brave and will never let you down, so I fully and fully support him. Good luck, Dr. Oz. Our country needs you!”
Ozzie competed for Trump’s support against former hedge fund CEO David McCormick, whose wife Dina Powell served in the Trump administration.
Trump said in a radio interview last week that he was close to making a decision but had not yet done so. “I like this guy,” he said of Oz, “so let’s see what happens.”
Trump had previously supported Sean Parnell in the race, but Parnell withdrew his candidacy due to allegations of violence by his estranged wife.
