For almost the entire minute, Democratic senators and people sitting on the Senate balcony stood and cheered on Thursday for Katanji Brown Jackson’s historic confirmation in the Supreme Court.
But as the camera rotates in the room, a lone Republican senator exclaims: Mitt Romney from Utah.
Romney was one of three GOP senators who recently voted in favor of Jackson, along with Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Susan Collins (Maine). However, it appears that he was the only Republican who decided to stay and had Jackson’s approval.
Here is a clip of Romney standing in rows of vacant seats on the Republican side of the Senate chamber. He was pleased with the Senate aides lined up on the wall behind him as GOP Representatives including Ted Cruz (Texas) and Mike Lee (Utah) hurried out of the room.
Romney Jackson’s support was not expected. In June, unlike Murkovsky and Collins, he objected to the approval of his seat in the United States District Court of the District of Columbia.
