Negotiations can lead to the use of four -cylinder BMW engines on new Mercedes models, including hybrids and electric cars with additional generator engine.
Mercedes-Benz is talking to BMW about possible fuel supply for future models. According to Autocar, the parties are at a high level of planning, and the final solution is expected before the end of the year. For Mercedes, it can be part of an updated approach to the field of internal combustion engines against a background less than predicted, demand for electrical cars.
According to German publication, manager Magazin, the agreement provides that BMW will provide a new generation of four -cycylinder fuel units to be installed in a wide range of Mercedes models. We’re talking about cars from CLA, GLA, GLB and “Little G” to C-class, E-Class and GLC. Cooperation is explained by the desire to reduce development costs and at the same time ensure compliance with Euro 7’s new ecological customs, which will continue to issue an internal engine combustion and expand plug-in hybrids without further investments.
Today, Mercedes begins to introduce its own turbocharged four -cylinder M252 engines with a volume of 1.5 liters created in Germany and made in China with a joint horse adventure (Geely and Renault). This machine is already used in the new CLA and is offered in three versions of electricity -136, 163 and 190 HP. It is accompanied by an eight -speed robotic gearbox with two clutch, which includes an electric motor at 27 hp. However, this unit is suitable for soft hybrids, but is not adapted for plug-in hybrids or electrical vehicles with an additional generator engine.
In this context, Mercedes can access the BMW engine -a turbocharged two -liter four -cycylinder unit of the B48 series, which is already used in most modern BMW and Mini models. This was done at a factory in Steira, Austria. The advantage of B48 is many capabilities: it is designed for both transverse and longitudinal locations, which can provide Mercedes with greater flexibility for installing both compact and medium -sized cars.
The possibility of creating joint production sites in the world, including a potential plant in the United States, is also discussed. This will reduce the risks associated with differential restrictions and provide more effective uses.
If the deal ends, it will be a historic previous one: the two leading German manufacturers of premium cars will be divided for the first time for the first time not only machines, but also in the future, perhaps, delivery.
We remind you, earlier it was reported that BMW did not plan to leave internal combustion engines.
