The company has accused Microsoft of “Manipulative Design” and unfair competition for imposing the Edge browser.

The Opera filed a complaint with Brazil’s antimonopoly regulator, accusing Microsoft of the systematic use of “manipulative design tactics” that forced users to stay on the browser side instead of switching to successors, Verge reports.

As the legal Opera advisor Aaron Makparlan, Microsoft intentionally limits the Windows competition: “First, alternative browsers, such as Opera, do not have access to initial installation capabilities. And then Microsoft prevents users from loading and using these browsers.”

In the complaint, the company listed a number of skills that violate user selection. For example, Windows ignores the default browser when opening PDF files, outlook links or Microsoft Teams, as well as joint function or widget operating. In addition, when trying to download another browser, users face aggressive banners that include staying on the side.

Opera chose Brazil to file a complaint by chance – this is one of the company’s major markets where its browser takes place third place in popularity. At the same time, the complaint speaks of Microsoft global skills. “This is an opportunity for Brazil to be the leader in protecting the digital competition,” Makparlan said.

If successful, the Opera requires a number of changes from Microsoft: stop blocking the download of third -Party browsers, allow PC manufacturers to first install other default browsers and the company is obliged to leave design skills in design manipulation.

The company also recalled that it had previously filed a similar complaint against Microsoft in 2007, which ultimately led to the emergence of the “browser selection” screen in Windows. Microsoft then is obliged to offer users an alternative to Internet Explorer, but subsequently punishes $ 730 million for failure to fulfill this request.

Earlier it was reported that twelve European sites filed court claims against Google, accusing the company of unfair competition.
