Russia has risen from sixth to second place in the largest imports of Chinese potatoes, defeated only in Kyrgyzstan.

In January-May 2025, China exported $ 36.8 million to Russia. This is almost 13 times more compared to the same period of 2024, when the volume of supplies is $ 2.9 million. This has been proven by the data of the PRC’s Chief Customs administration.

Thus, in May, delivery reached $ 14.6 million, which is over $ 1.9 million in May last year, and exceeded April indicator of $ 11.2 million.

According to the results of five months, Russia has increased from sixth to second place amidst the largest imports of Chinese potatoes, defeated only in Kyrgyzstan ($ 94 million).

The growth of imports in the Russian Federation is due to a sharp reduction in its own potato manufacture. In 2024, the yield reduced by about 12% – from 20.2 million tons to 17.83 million tons. In particular, in agricultural businesses, production decreased from 5.23 million to 4.35 million tons, while among farmers – from 3.4 million to 2.95 million tons.

Against the background of a lack of potatoes in the Russian Federation, they have grown rapidly – according to Rosstat, since the beginning of the year the product has risen about 1.6 times, leading to the market increase of fruit and vegetable products.

Remember that Russia, who has faced a lack and increased record of potatoes over the last 20 years, first started buying potatoes in Mongolia.

Earlier, formal Belarus president Alexander Lukashenko said the potatoes began to disappear into Belarus stores because it was actively sold in Russia.
