Since 2022, Russia has gained three times more money to export energy than Ukraine from western countries.
Since the beginning of an entire war, Russia has gained three times more funds to export energy carriers than Ukraine received from allies in the form of help. This was reported by the British Media BBC.
Energy carriers make up about a third of Russian state revenues and over 60% of its exports.
At the outbreak of the entire war, Kyiv allies introduced various sanctions against the Russian Federation. In particular, the United States and Great Britain banned Russian oil and gas, and the European Union -importing raw oil from the Russian Federation of the sea, but gas imports were not prohibited.
However, data from the Center for Studies of Energy and Clean Air (Crea) indicates that from February 24, 2022 to May 29, 2025, the Russian Federation has more than 883 billion euros from the sale of fossil fuel. In this amount, 228 billion euros from countries imposed sanctions, and most – 208 billion euros – specific from EU members.
European countries continued the direct import of Russian gas through the pipeline until January 1, 2025, Ukraine did not ban transit in its territory. However, Russia’s oil continues to provide Hungary and Slovakia pipelines.
Russia’s gas has continued to be delivered to Europe in growing volume by Turkey. According to Crea, sales volume increased by 26.77% in January and February 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.
Despite West’s efforts, in 2024, Russia’s income from the sale of energy carriers fell just 5% compared to 2023, and export volumes decreased by 6%. Instead, revenue from gas sales through pipelines increased by 9% in the annual calculus.
Meanwhile, they admitted that they still have not applied the most strict penalties against Russia’s oil and gas, as some bloc countries are afraid of rising war and because the purchase of energy from the Russian Federation is “cheaper in the short term.” In the new, the 17th package of sanctions against Russia there were no restrictions on Russian LNG’s import, but a roadmap at the final end of gas imports from Russia was adopted by the end of 2027.
Part of Russian oil enters the west after processing fuel products in third countries. Sometimes oil from the Russian Federation is simply dissolved by crude oil from other countries.
Earlier, the media wrote that the United States and the Russian Federation discussed the possibility of restoring Russian gas supplies to Europe.
RF and Serbia have extended the contract for gas supply
