EU canceled the ban on carbon fiber on cars

The European Parliament has officially confirmed that the disputed point of integrating carbon fiber in the list of hazardous materials is not included in the proposal for new environmental standards, Motor1 reports.

The amendment to the ban on carbon fiber and other components was added to the EU directive for the use of cars in January 2025. It aims to repair the use of certain materials in making a car to reduce environmental damage. In addition to carbon fiber, the amendment includes lead, kadmium, mercury and a six -core chromium.

According to this proposal, carbon fibers during destruction or combustion can fall into the air and are dangerous in skin contact, as well as harmful to processing machines. However, after further examination, it became clear that the benefits of using carbon fiber significantly exceed potential risks.

The automotic industry consumes about 20% of the total global carbon fiber manufacture. This material is important for electric vehicles: the lightweight weight of carbon elements helps to reduce the total car mass, increases the margin without survival or design.
