Despite a significant reduction in gas pipelines from Russia after 2022, the EU last year increased the import of liquid gas from the Russian Federation – it covered 19% of the needs of the European Union.

The European Commission will publish an updated approach of a phased denial of Russia and Gas on May 6. It reports about this Reuters On Tuesday, April 15.

The EU has taken the obligation to completely abandon the import of Russian fossil energy until 2027 in response to a full -scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. It was originally planned that the detailed plan would appear in April, but according to the Order of the Day published on Monday, the document would be submitted only in May.

As notes ReutersThe delays are slightly associated with uncertainty about potential tariffs from the United States. The importance of energy can be the subject of trade negotiations between Washington and Brussels.

Despite a significant reduction in gas supply from Russia after 2022, the EU last year increased the import of liquid gas from the Russian Federation – it covered 19% of the needs of the European Union.

Unlike oil, the EU has not yet imposed Russian gas penalties. Whereas Hungary generally says he will block energy restrictions that require unity among members of the country. Some other governments also do not support LNG import restrictions until solid alternatives have emerged.

Currently, part of the Russian Federation in European Union gas imports is only about 13%. Prior to the war, this indicator exceeded 40%. Gas from Russia is now entering the EU in the form of LNG in sea tanks, as well as the only gas pipeline “Turkish stream” in some countries, such as Hungary and Slovakia.

According to FT, EC lawyers are now studying legal options for how European companies have destroyed fuel contracts with companies in the Russian Federation without paying them a large fines. It is advisable to express the force majeure provided by the contracts.

It is hoped that the decline of energy from the Russian Federation will force the European Union to increase imports from other resources, including from the United States. The American LNG helped Europe during the 2022 crisis, and last year the United States became the third largest gas supplier in the European market.

Earlier it was reported that the European Union had decided until 2027 to completely abandon Russia’s gas. Starting this year, the delivery will begin from a promise of Black Sea Field in Romania, the operator of which the first contract in Germany has ended.
