Brussels should have a replacement for American Visa, Mastercard, Paypal and Chinese Alipay. Just in case.
European Central Bank leader Christine Lagard called the European Union to create his own payment infrastructure, which could be an alternative to the dominance of American and Chinese giants, such as Visa, Mastercard, Paypal and Alipay. He presented it in an interview with the Irish Newstalk radio.
“When you pay for a card or a phone, even in Europe, you use non -european systems. The entire payment infrastructure is from the USA or from China. We must change it,” Lagarda emphasized.
According to the ECB leader, the European Union will need to strengthen control of digital calculations to maintain strategic autonomy not only in the financial sector, but also in the field of trade and defense.
Lagarda noted that, despite the fact that American and Chinese systems work in accordance with EU policies, he still believes that Brussels should “make sure there is a proposal in Europe” – just in case. “You don’t know,” he said.
Remember, US President Donald Trump spoke of reparations from Europe. According to him, the EU should pay a lot of money – not only for the present, but also for the past.
