The Russian regime says the fire was caused by an “internal factor” and that local residents will report that something “fell” at the plant.
Lukoil’s Volgograd refinery, where a fire broke out on Wednesday, January 15, “for unknown reasons,” stopped the diesel fuel hydrotreating unit. This was reported by Reuters on Thursday, January 16, citing sources familiar with the situation.
The plant, which is among the top 10 largest in Russia, and last year processed 13.7 million tons of oil, lost half of its diesel fuel production capacity, or about 10 thousand tons per day, said the one of the agency’s interlocutors.
The cause of the incident at the plant, which produces about 7% of all diesel fuel in Russia, was an “exceptional situation”, while there was no “external influence” on the business, Interfax sources in the emergency services assured the previous day. . But local residents said that someone fell from the plant, then there was an explosion.
Volgograd Refinery is the largest producer of petroleum products in the Southern Federal District. Last year it produced 1.9 million tons of motor fuel (4.3% of Russia’s total production), 6 million tons of diesel fuel (6.9%) and 0.8 million tons of oil fuel (1.9%).
In 2024, the plant was attacked twice by Ukrainian UAVs and was forced to stop production twice.
Previously, a large-scale fire broke out at an oil refinery in Volgograd on January 15.
