The oil service company SLB was forced to leave the Russian Federation due to sanctions

The company itself did not respond to a request for new restrictions, but said on its website that it takes enforcement of the sanctions seriously.

One of the largest US energy groups, SLB (known as Schlumberger), was forced to stop its activities in Russia after the introduction of large-scale new sanctions against the Russian oil industry. The Financial Times writes about it.

As two members of the US Congress told the publication, the oil service company SLB must leave the Russian Federation, otherwise it could violate the new US sanctions.

Lloyd Doggett and Jake Auchinclaw contacted the company after President Joe Biden’s administration unveiled the new order on January 10. The order prohibits the provision of oil industry services to people located in Russia as of February 27.

It was noted that the appeal to SLB to leave Russia came almost three years after the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine. This reflects concerns that some Western companies are still backing important Russian energy projects.

The company itself did not respond to a request for new restrictions, but said on its website that it takes enforcement of the sanctions seriously.

Although the official US Treasury order did not mention SLB itself or its Russian subsidiary, members of Congress and lawyers note that the new restrictions create additional legal risks for the company if it continues to operate in Russian Federation.

“Any reasonable interpretation of the new Treasury document to ‘cut off access to US crude oil services’ would mean pulling US oil service companies out of Russia,” said Doggett, the Texas Democratic congressman .

Let’s recall that the US authorities have announced new large-scale sanctions against the Russian oil sector. The new restrictions cover more than 400 individuals and organizations in Russia’s energy sector that directly or indirectly fund the Kremlin’s war machine.
