Telegram messenger transferred the data of more than 2,200 users to the American authorities in 2024. TechCrunch reported this.
After the arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov in Paris in August, the company significantly increased the transfer of user data to law enforcement agencies.
In 2024, the company provided user information such as phone numbers and IP addresses to US authorities 900 times, affecting 2,253 users. This is a sharp jump from the previous period, when Telegram fulfilled only 14 requests based on data from 108 users.
Telegram also shared data with Indian law enforcement 14,641 times, affecting 23,535 users. In the UK, the company shared information 142 times, affecting 293 users.
The requests were mostly fulfilled after Telegram announced changes to its privacy policy in September.
In 2024, Telegram blocked 15.3 million channels and groups. Among them, 702 thousand contain materials about sexual abuse of children, and 129 thousand are related to terrorism.
