Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) will stop flights to some cities in Russia from December 28. Its press service reported this on Friday, December 27.
So, flights will be suspended in Mineralnye Vody, Sochi, Volgograd, Ufa and Samara. At the same time, from December 25, the company canceled flights from Baku to Grozny and Makhachkala.
AZAL said that the decision to suspend flights to these seven cities of the Russian Federation was made by the State Air Aviation Agency of Azerbaijan.
“This decision… is based on the preliminary results of the investigation into the accident of Embraer 190 flight J2-8243 of Azerbaijan Airlines due to physical and technical interference from outside and taking into account the potential risks to flight safety is in effect until the completion of the final investigation,” the statement said.
The company still operates flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Astrakhan, Yekaterinburg and Novosibirsk.
Also today, Kazakh airline Qazaq Air announced the suspension of flights to Russia on the Astana-Ekaterinburg route until January 27 next year. This was done to ensure the safety of passengers and crew based on the results of the ongoing risk assessment of flights to Russia.
We remind you that on December 25, an Azerbaijan Airlines plane crashed in Aktau, Kazakhstan, flying on a Baku-Grozny flight. 38 people died then. There were a total of 67 people on board, mostly Azerbaijani citizens.
The previous day, the media reported that the plane was attacked on approach to Grozny by a missile from the Pantsir-S anti-aircraft system. The Russians barred crews from landing at Russian airfields and jammed electronic war communications. They expect the plane to crash into the Caspian Sea, sources said.
Azerbaijani Parliament member Rasim Musabekov directly said that Russia should apologize for the attack on the Azerbaijan Airlines plane.
