Swiss group SGS, which specializes in product inspection and certification, is expanding its cosmetics and hygiene product testing activities with the acquisition of German dermatology laboratory Proderm GmbH, it announced on Friday. Founded in 1994, this Hamburg-based laboratory specializes in clinical testing of cosmetics, personal care products and medical products, the Geneva group said in a press release.
It tests skin creams as well as antiaging care, baby products, deodorants, hair removal products, and medical equipment and products for skin irritation, among others, the lab details on its website. SGS, which regularly makes targeted acquisitions, did not disclose the amount of the deal. However, he detailed that Proderm’s annual turnover last year was the equivalent of 13 million Swiss francs (€13.1 million) for the financial year ending June 30, 2021. He employs 140 people.
This acquisition “significantly strengthens” the Swiss group’s operations in the field of cosmetics and hygiene products, its CEO Frankie Ng emphasized, citing the press release. The Geneva-based group, whose main competitors include France’s Eurofins Scientific and Bureau Veritas, has 45 laboratories around the world specializing in the analysis of cosmetics, detergents and hygiene products. Since the start of the year, SGS has completed six deals, including the acquisition of a French laboratory based in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin for testing for the naval and nuclear industries and the acquisition of marine environment monitoring in Chile.
