The tech giant was fined for violating antitrust laws related to its privacy policies.
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered WhatsApp to stop sharing user data for advertising purposes with other Meta-owned apps for five years. It was reported by Reuters.
The Commission also fined the tech giant $25.4 million for violating antitrust laws related to the messaging app’s 2021 privacy policy.
As is known, in March 2021, the CCI started an investigation into the privacy policy of the WhatsApp messenger, which allows the sharing of data with Facebook and its divisions, which caused a negative reaction around the world.
The Indian government is reviewing the February report of a commission set up by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The report proposes a new digital competition bill that would complement existing antitrust laws.
We remind you that on November 14, the European Commission fined Meta Platforms 797.72 million euros for abuse in favor of Facebook Marketplace.
Earlier, a group of 83 Spanish media outlets filed a €550 million lawsuit against Meta for violating EU data protection rules.
