Despite the excellent conditions for the development of vegetable growing and horticulture, such as fertile soil, favorable climate and proximity to the EU market, Ukraine is a net importer of most fruits and vegetables.
Ukraine faces high losses after the harvest of fruits and vegetables, which can reach 40-60%. This is due to an insufficient number of appropriate storage facilities, as noted in the analysis of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy on the market for fresh fruits and vegetables in Ukraine and the EU. This is stated in the analysis of the fresh fruit and vegetable market in the EU and Ukraine.
Despite the excellent conditions for the development of vegetable growing and horticulture, such as fertile soil, favorable climate and proximity to the EU market, Ukraine is a net importer of most fruits and vegetables.
Production is mainly concentrated in small farms, which account for 94% of the vegetable volume and 82% of the fruit volume.
It should be noted that the development of this industry can be an important element in economic recovery and rural development. However, it is hampered by the low level of mechanization compared to the EU, lack of export certificates and lack of storage facilities. The war also caused further hardships, destroying a third of fresh water supplies and mining large areas, making it difficult to grow vegetables.
We remind you that in Ukraine, potato prices are setting new records. At the beginning of October, potatoes were sold for 17-22 hryvnia.
