SAR ICEYE satellites can produce high-resolution images, unlike conventional satellites.
The German arms company Rheinmetall and the satellite company SAR ICEYE joined forces in September 2024 to help Ukraine (providing satellite images), and now reports the first successes of such collaboration. This was reported on the Rheinmetall website.
Since the beginning of October 2024, Ukraine has been receiving new satellite images taken by ICEYE SAR (synthetic aperture radar) satellites as part of the cooperation between Rheinmetall and ICEYE.
SAR satellites have an advantage over conventional satellites because they can produce high-resolution images regardless of weather conditions or time of day. They are very detailed and allow you to recognize even the smallest objects on the surface of the earth. This can provide “a decisive advantage to military forces in surveillance, target acquisition, motion monitoring or their own positioning on the battlefield.”
The Düsseldorf-based technology group announced participation in the world’s largest fleet of radar reconnaissance satellites in June 2024, and in September, Rheinmetall and ICEYE further intensified their cooperation. Rheinmetall has exclusively acquired the rights to sell SAR satellites to military and government customers in the German and Hungarian markets.
ICEYE works closely with the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense to support Ukraine in developing space defense. ICEYE also provides access to its constellation of SAR satellites, allowing Ukrainian forces to obtain radar satellite imagery of critical locations.
Let’s remember that in 2022, Sergei Pritula’s foundation bought a satellite for the Ukrainian Armed Forces for 600 million hryvnias collected by Ukrainians.
