Austria introduced the “use it or lose it” principle, which implies that gas storage facilities should be used for their purpose-to store fuel.
Austrian authorities have decided to transfer to other suppliers the largest underground gas storage facility in Haidach, owned by Gazprom. This is due to the fact that Russia’s concern is not filling UGS facilities, the Prime report cited Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer on Wednesday, July 6th.
According to him, the country has introduced the “use it or lose it” principle, which implies that gas storage facilities should be used for their purpose-to store fuel.
“And if that doesn’t happen, then they will be removed from the operator and made available to others for gas storage,” Nehammer said at a press conference.
He clarified that once the gas storage facility in Haidach is handed over to other suppliers, it will be available to Austria in the future.
It is indicated that the EU has instructed Austria and Germany to jointly regulate the filling of this gas storage. The countries are already making a bilateral agreement. The second step is to connect the storage to the Austrian gas network. This step is already contained in the legal order, it is expected to be implemented soon.
Earlier, Germany removed Gazprom from the country’s largest UGS facility Rehden with a volume of 4 billion cubic meters. Then in Russia they complained about the “forced” filling of this gas storage.
