The underground hospital is energy-independent, and is also fully camouflaged and protected, primarily by electronic warfare equipment.
Metinvest built the first Ukrainian and the only underground hospital on the European continent. Currently, it receives 100 wounded soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces per day, Metinvest Group Operations Director Alexander Mironenko said in an interview.
According to him, the underground hospital is fully camouflaged and protected, including electronic warfare (EW) means.
“It is not fluctuating thanks to two generators, which are located nearby in a separate underground room. And when the current is lost in the general electricity network, the generators fully supply the hospital with electricity, thanks if where the underground facility is supplied with water, there are septic tanks and things necessary for the functioning of the sewage system And to provide air to the underground hospital, it is equipped with supply and exhaust ventilation,” said Mironenko.
He said the hospital’s capacity is up to 100 wounded per day.
“It is approximately a military hospital at the level of an operational-tactical group of troops,” Mironenko stressed.
According to his estimates, at least 20 such hospitals with operating rooms are needed along the front line.
“We also have developments for the brigade level: about 200 units of such facilities are needed for the battalion level providing assistance and preserving the life of the defenders hundreds of units of underground hospitals with different levels are needed,” said Mironenko.
He clarified that Metinvest built the first underground hospital at its own expense, except for special equipment provided by military doctors. In total, this stabilization point cost the company UAH 20 million, of which UAH 7 million is medical equipment, and UAH 13 million is the cost of steel “hidden,” their repair, maintenance and installation.
“We cannot meet the financial need on our own, after all, spending 20 million UAH in each large hospital is a huge financial burden, but with the state… Unfortunately, we cannot plan to spend next year, for example, half a billion hryvnias for the construction of hospitals and therefore these should be joint projects with the state, “said Mironenko.
According to him, the Ukrainian development of underground hospitals is of interest to Europeans – there are similar projects there, but they are not adapted to a war like in Ukraine, but simply stationary structures above ground which provides a similar range of services.
“Therefore, the experience that Ukraine is getting today will be studied and implemented by Western partners in their military developments and doctrines. Because when you are at war with an enemy like Russia, which has its own aircraft, bombs and wide-range weapons, it is necessary to withstand important valuables as much as possible underground,” concluded Mironenko.
Let’s recall that in the spring of last year it was reported about the mass production and supply of steel “cache” bunkers for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In the winter of this year, Metinvest began the production of steel headquarters bunkers.
In September, Metinvest, in cooperation with the medical forces of Vostok, created the first underground hospital to save the lives of soldiers at the front.
