The company plans to complete this project – laying 22 km of narrow track – by the end of this year.
Ukrzaliznytsia has completed part of the Euro-gauge track construction work on the Chop-Uzhgorod section – the largest railway infrastructure project in 2024. Currently, 3.5 km of broad gauge track has been laid on an 8.3 km section, which is part of the 22 km long narrow gauge track project. The press service of Ukrzaliznytsia reported this on its Telegram channel on Friday, October 18.
“As part of the project, Ukrzaliznytsia is relaying a wide gauge track, leveling it in the Strumkovka-Chop section, where the Euro-gauge track will also be laid parallel to 3.5 km of the required 8.3 km of track has been rebuilt,” the statement said.
Work on a wide section of the track will be completed by the end of 2024. The bridge will also be repaired as part of the project. Communications are currently being updated.
“Over the past year, we have prepared the entire base for the implementation of a series of infrastructure projects of European integration… The largest (of them, – ed.) is the construction of the Euro-gauge railway between of Uzhgorod and Chop. Ukrzaliznytsia must complete the project within the planned time frame,” stressed the Chairman of the Board of Uzbekistan Evgeniy Leshchenko.
He assured that passengers and carriers will already see a positive impact from the launch of the Chop-Uzhgorod Eurogauge railway on freight and passenger routes next year.
The company recalled that two parallel gauges will operate between Uzhgorod and Chop: wide gauge – 1520 mm and Euro gauge – 1435.
The total cost of the project is UAH 1.3 billion. Half of this amount will be financed from the EU Connecting Europe Facilit (CEF). The project won the CEF competition in 2022.
UZ plans to complete the construction of European gauge (1435 mm) Chop-Uzhgorod in July 2025.
The construction project involves the construction of 22 km of European standard railways, the reconstruction of artificial structures, facilities and utility networks, as well as the provision of two-way semi- automatic blocking and microprocessor-based dispatch centralization devices.
Let’s recall that in April of this year, Prime Minister Denis Shmygal announced that Uzhgorod will be the first regional center of Ukraine to be connected by Euro-gauge to Europe.
Earlier, Ukrzaliznytsia developed the first grain carrier, suitable for Eurogauge transportation.
