The joint venture will develop a new main battle tank for Italy and the Lynx combat vehicle.
The German defense concern Rheinmetall and the Italian company Leonardo have agreed to create a joint venture for the production of military equipment, estimating its potential orders at 50 billion euros. This was communicated to the company on Tuesday, October 15.
The Rome-headquartered company will develop a new main battle tank for Italy and the Lynx combat vehicle.
The companies will own equal shares of Leonardo Rheinmetall Military Vehicles (LRMV). The distribution of labor will also be 50/50, with 60% of the work carried out in Italy. Production is concentrated in La Spezia in northern Italy, where Leonardo already has a plant.
The main task of the LRMV was the development and production of a main battle tank for the Italian army to replace the Ariete tanks. The combat vehicle will be based on the German KF51 Panther tank.
The company also manufactures Lynx infantry fighting vehicles. On the basis of this armored vehicle, it is also planned to create a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun with a Skyranger module for reconnaissance and anti-tank modifications.
After meeting the demands of the Italian army for rearmament, export production of armored vehicles was planned.
Let’s remember that earlier one of the NATO countries ordered artillery ammunition worth about 300 million euros from the German defense company Rheinmetall.
Lithuania signed an agreement with the German concern Rheinmetall to build a plant for the production of shells. Its value will be 180 million euros.
