The growth rate of fresh blueberry exports from Ukraine accelerated rapidly in 2022 and 2023, despite Russia’s massive invasion.
Ukraine took third place in the ranking of the main blueberry exporters, increasing exports by 21% annually (by 530 tons per year). This was reported by the EastFruit project.
It was noted that the growth rate of fresh blueberry exports from Ukraine in 2022 and 2023 accelerated significantly, despite the full-scale invasion of Russia.
In 2022, Ukraine increased the export of this berry by 1.1 thousand tons, and last year – by 940 tons.
Georgia leads in terms of blueberry export growth rates in 2023. It showed an increase of 55% annually in the period 2019 – 2023. The increase in exports in 2023 is 2.5 times greater than last year, allowing Georgia to enter the top 20 exporters for the first time, ahead of countries such as Italy and China.
Zimbabwe is second. Blueberry exports there have grown 48% annually over the past five years. In 2022, Zimbabwe led the world in export growth among the top 20 countries, a performance that continued until 2023.
Last year, the top 20 also included China, which is rapidly increasing the area under blueberries and is gradually becoming an exporter of this berry.
Only Chile, Argentina and New Zealand have reduced export volumes on average over the past five years.
Among the top ten largest exporters of fresh blueberries, the leaders in terms of growth rates are Serbia, Mexico and Morocco.
And Peru remains the world leader in blueberry exports, far ahead of its competitors. Despite the sharp drop in exports in 2023, Peru exports 2.5 times more blueberries than Chile, and the five-year average growth rate is still 14.5%, or 28.2 thousand tons per year. EastFruit analysts estimate Peru’s share in the net (excluding re-exports) international trade of fresh blueberries in 2019 – 2023 at 30-32%.
Let us remind you that last year Ukraine set a historical record for blueberry exports – more than 4 thousand tons of fresh berries.
It was also reported that in the 2023/2024 marketing year (from July 1, 2023 to May 1, 2024), Ukraine exported 41.365 million tons of grain and legumes.
