Preparing the Ukrainian energy system for winter: The President met with the heads of leading American energy companies.
President Vladimir Zelensky met in New York with the heads of leading American energy, finance and insurance companies. The press service of the Ukrainian leader reported this on Tuesday, September 24.
It was reported that United States Agency for International Development (USAID) administrator Samantha Power and US Under Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard Verma also took part in the meeting.
“The energy issue concerns not only today, but also the future. We must prepare for the heating season, because this is our weakness now, since the energy grid is attacked every day, really every day. This is not just rhetoric, these are real. Putin’s pragmatic attack,” – said Zelensky.
He emphasized that much has been done to prepare for winter thanks to the support of partners. At the same time, the work done by the state is also important, especially in decentralizing the energy system. Ukraine also needs increased assistance, including related to transformers.
“The biggest challenge is what to do when there is no electricity. In summer it is a situation, but closer to winter it is completely different, not only about electricity, but also about heating, communication, telephone – everything This is your life,” he added president.
Samantha Power noted that Vladimir Putin tries to use the cold as a weapon every winter to force people to leave the country.
“So this time he’s hoping Mother Nature is on his side, he’s hoping the Ukrainian people and all of us will get tired of this fight And I think we’re gathered here today to prove him wrong, that’s his bet wrong, as it has been so far,” she said.
During the meeting, plans to prepare the Ukrainian energy system for winter and the possibility of implementing joint projects in the energy sector were discussed in detail.
Earlier, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced a “winter plan” for Ukraine. An additional 4.5 GW of capacity will be provided.
