Some of these fuels in the global energy balance have decreased slightly, but the numbers are still high on record, the Energy Institute says.
Global fossil fuel consumption and emissions reached record levels last year, although the share of fossil fuels in the global energy mix declined slightly over the year. This was reported by Reuters with reference to a report by the Energy Institute.
Last year marked the first full year of redirecting Russian energy flows from the West since Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine and the first full year without major travel restrictions related to the COVID- 19.
Total global primary energy consumption reached a record 620 exajoules (EJ) and emissions exceeded 40 gigatons of CO for the first time2.
The report documents changing trends in fossil fuel use in different regions. In Europe, for example, the share of fossil fuels in the energy mix has fallen below 70% for the first time since the Industrial Revolution.
Fossil fuels will account for most of India’s demand growth in 2023, while China’s fossil fuel use rose 6% to a new high, the report said. However, China has also accounted for more than half of the global increase in renewable energy production since last year.
Global primary energy demand in 2023 increased by 2% compared to 2022 and reached 620 EJ.
Fossil fuel use increased by 1.5% to 505 EJ, accounting for 81.5% of the total energy mix, down 0.5% from 2022.
By 2023, fossil fuel use has not increased in any European country.
Renewable fuel production (excluding hydropower) rose 13% to a new record high of 4,748 terawatt-hours (TWh). The share of renewable energy in the total energy mix excluding hydropower is 8%, compared to 7.5% in the 2022 report.
As we have already written, Ukraine plans to build a plant for the production of fuel assemblies (FA) to supply nuclear power plants with fuel.
