How Ukrainians fell in love with local dentistry

Interview with the head of the dental center “Maident”, dental doctor, Ganna Kovanova.

The whole world knows that Ukrainians can “show their teeth”, and it is absolutely true to say this not only in a figurative way, but also in a direct sense – Ukrainian dentistry is expected to last in the world: Ukraine is actively developing and improving the culture of dental assistants in the population!

The war showed us that we underestimated the severity and comfort of living in Ukraine: many Ukrainians are pleased to know that the level of service in Europe is often compromised by the fact that the stench starts to come out of the house. Many Ukrainians now return to Ukraine for medical and dental services. Ganna Kovanova, a dentist from another generation, the founder and medical director of the Maydent dental center, talks about the achievements of Ukrainian dentistry.

The first dental center “Maident” was opened in Kiev in 2015 and operates at the address Mykhailo Drahomanov Street, 40Є. Today, the center has successfully received more than 17,000 patients. – Hanno, will the market for dental services continue to develop during this period?

So! Ukrainian dentistry has become not only an unknown warehouse of the dental industry in Europe, but also its leading part. In modern dentistry in Ukraine, which is developing due to crazy fluidity, it is necessary for doctors to actively update knowledge and skills. Technologies and treatment protocols are constantly being perfected, so it is difficult to be a successful fakhiv without regular training. During the stressful period, in the harsh year of 2022, when Ukraine removed some of the medical personnel and patients, adaptation to new minds will take a long time. – You confirm that dentistry is rapidly developing and changing. What do we expect today for the standards of everyday dentistry, and what manifestations should we change?

The first basic standard of everyday dentistry depends on the hygiene category of the dental deposit – this is the guarantee of safety. Another criterion, which only supports the first, is sterility. In dentistry, it is critical to prevent infection and maintain healthy patients: non-sterile instruments can harbor pathogenic microorganisms, which can lead to serious aggravation of infections. To speed up the sterilization of instruments, daily clinics use new thermal disinfectors and autoclaves, which ensure effective processing of instruments using high temperature and pressure. It is also important to follow the correct packaging protocols: all instruments in the doctor’s arsenal must be hermetically sealed in special craft bags and kept open in the presence of the patient before manipulation.

New technological opportunities open up with advanced technology, which makes it even more important to invest in modern technology. For example, the availability of surgical microscopes in everyday dental clinics opens up new prospects for complex procedures such as dental root canals, fillings, crowns and veneers. At “Maident” we have a dozen advanced microscopes that advance the quality of medical services. The use of computer tomograph in dentistry will provide an invaluable basis for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Along with less informative and diagnostic 2D X-ray images, the computer tomograph will provide an accurate and objective 3D image of the teeth. The use of digital protocols in current practice has significantly increased the effectiveness of treatment and prediction of outcomes. Instead of classical methods, such as the preparation of adhesives, a digital scanner allows you to get a high-quality trivariate model of the structure of the teeth, which significantly improves the accuracy and efficiency of dental planning and treatment process from dental laboratories, and using a digital protocol before dental implantation to achieve a more advanced and less invasive procedure, which minimizes the risk of damage and improves the patient’s recovery after surgery. – What caused the disgrace of Ukrainian dentistry, now all over the world?

I measured the whole process and imagined the result, protected by the competition! In European countries, most people have an insurance policy that covers basic dental care. Therefore, doctors are increasingly engaged in simple procedures: installing more accessible metal-ceramic crowns, replacing ceramic veneers or zirconium crowns, known prostheses, replacing unknown structures with implants . Ukrainians rely on modern dentistry to revitalize their smile. This creates great competition for dentists in Ukraine. To meet the high demands of their patients, they compete vigorously, providing high quality service, innovative advanced technologies and reliable back-up services.

– What dental services are currently the most popular?

Today, there is a great need for therapeutic dental treatment of caries and root canals of teeth, caries is one of the most common dental diseases in the world and is more common in all of us ix century old groups of population. There is also interest before dental prosthetics and implantation. As before the war, patients have requests for aesthetic dentistry – the installation of ceramic veneers – and this demand is growing. However, we always hear that the idea is not only about beauty and aesthetics, but above all about the function of the teeth in an empty mouth. With the help of veneers, you can correct the color, shape, and small anomalies in the position of the teeth. Many patients need to go for preventive examinations at the right time to maintain proper oral hygiene.

– The war affects our whole life, the skin of people, the skin of the company. How to go through the Maydent clinic during this time?

At the end of 2022, of course, adjustments were made, but in 2.5 years, the stable structure of the team was greatly improved.

Since the beginning of the invasion, our center has provided free assistance to military personnel with severe pain, for example, tooth extraction or root canal therapy. We perform free dental rehabilitation of military patients with advanced clinical decline after injuries or with repeated loss of teeth as a result of combat operations. The goal of the treatment – Implantation All on 4 or All on 6 – is a surgical procedure that allows you to fix the gap with four or six implants.

We also began to actively engage in the development of nutritional care for military personnel on the front line and realized that the main problem is: through the lack of constant hygiene and weakening of the immune system, that help is necessary.
