Canada was the first of the Western countries to impose sanctions against the Russian company VSMPO-Avisma.
Canadian authorities have given permission to Airbus to use titanium from Russia for the production of aircraft. It was reported by Reuters.
“Airbus is aware that the Canadian government has imposed sanctions against Russian VSMPO-Avismaand received the necessary clearance to ensure the safety of Airbus operations in accordance with applicable sanctions,” the company said.
At the same time, the company did not provide detailed information about the permits or say how long they will be valid. The Canadian government, which was the first in the West to ban Russian titanium supplies, also declined to comment.
In 2022, after the start of a full-scale Russian war in Ukraine, Airbus announced its intention to refuse titanium supplies from Russia for several months. The company expanded purchases from the USA and Japan. However, certification of new suppliers to aerospace standards can take years.
Russian corporation VSMPO-Avisma is the largest titanium producer in the world. He was sanctioned by Canada in February 2024. In September 2023, the US Department of Commerce imposed export controls on the company that did not prohibit the purchase of titanium.
Let’s remember that last year China finally excluded Russia from the CR929 airliner project, which competes with aircraft produced by Boeing and Airbus.
