The production of Chinese cars will be organized at the former plant of the Japanese company Nissan in Catalonia, which was closed in 2021, and will start this year.
Chinese automaker Chery Auto has signed an agreement to create a joint venture in Spain with Catalan EV Motors, which will be the company’s first plant in Europe. It was reported by Reuters.
The production of Chinese cars will be organized at the former plant of the Japanese company Nissan in Catalonia, which was closed in 2021, and will start this year.
It is known that Chery is a junior partner in the joint venture and will start production of its Omoda models first. Major shareholder EV Motors will start making its own vehicles in the fourth quarter.
The previously closed Nissan plant in Catalonia has been partially taken over by Spanish electric motorcycle maker Silence and local engineering groups QEV and EV Motors, who plan to turn it into an electric vehicle production center. In March, EV Motors took full control of the venture company and played a key role in negotiations with Chery.
The Catalan government said it would fund training programs for former Nissan workers to speed up the transition to Chery production.
Local officials expect Chery to help restore at least some of the 1,600 jobs lost since the plant closed in 2012.
It was earlier reported that the largest Korean car manufacturer Hyundai Motor Company and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) signed agreements on the joint construction of an automobile production plant in Saudi Arabia.
We remind you that American automaker Tesla plans to build a plant in India for the production of Powerwall energy storage devices as part of plans to increase its presence in the country.
