Apple took the lead at the end of 2023, but Samsung successfully regained the top spot in the first quarter of 2024.
The South Korean giant Samsung has become the world’s largest smartphone supplier in the first quarter of 2024. This is confirmed by new data from the International Data Corporation.
By the end of 2023, American Apple Inc. became the leader for the first time. Global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2024 rose 7.8% year-on-year, to 289.4 million units.
The growth was recorded for the third quarter in a row, indicating the continuation of the market after a two-year decline.
Samsung saw its sales decline by 0.7% year over year, while Apple’s sales fell by 9.6%. Meanwhile, China’s Xiaomi rose by a third, and the Transsion brand recorded an increase of almost 85% and rose to fourth place in the list of the world’s largest smartphone suppliers.
“Apple took the lead last year, but Samsung successfully reclaimed the top spot in the first quarter,” said Ryan Rieth, vice president of Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers.
Analysts expect Samsung and Apple to continue to dominate the high-end segment, but also point to the potential for further growth and diversification of brands such as Huawei, Xiaomi, Transsion, OPPO/OnePlus and vivo.
It will be remembered that Apple has laid off 614 workers in Santa Clara (California). This is the first mass layoff at the company in a long time.
