Ukraine has the ability to import or obtain emergency aid from neighboring EU countries when necessary.
The connection of the Ukrainian energy system with the European Network of Electricity Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E) made it possible to get rid of dependence on the Russian network and provided a large number of advantages. This was said by the General Director of DTEK Energy Ildar Saleev on the air in Suspilny.
He recalled that the synchronization of the energy systems of Ukraine and the EU took place on March 16, 2022, after three weeks of isolated operations that began on February 24, the day of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Among the advantages of synchronization, Saleev named the strengthening of energy security – the lack of dependence on the Russian and Belarusian networks, with which the Ukrainian energy system has historically been connected since the time of USSR.
He also emphasized the opportunities for cross-border flows that are necessary when there is a lack of capacity in the energy system. During the war, this situation arose more than once, especially during shelling. This allowed the Ukrainian energy system a chance to hedge its bets.
Saleev said that the third advantage of ENTSO-E synchronization is the ability to import or obtain emergency aid from neighboring European countries when there is a need for it.
“When, on the contrary, there is enough generation and there is excess electricity production, we can export it, attract foreign exchange earnings and additional funds to the country. This also allows Ukrainian energy companies to invest these funds in repair, restoration, and preparation for next winter,” added the DTEK CEO.
We remind you that the previous DTEK summarized the results of the second winter under war conditions. Energy workers were able to restore 10 power units and in addition reactivated two more units.
In just two months of 2024, DTEK specialists restored electricity to more than 1.1 million Ukrainians who were without electricity due to Russian shelling.
