Swiss lawyers call this decision a “turning point” in the application of restrictions against Russia.
The Swiss Prosecutor General has opened criminal proceedings for the violation of sanctions against Russia by an unnamed company, the Financial Times reports.
The company (the Office of the Prosecutor General did not indicate in which sector it operates) violated Swiss rules for compliance with the sanctions regime against the Russian Federation by using subsidiaries abroad.
The prosecutor general took over the case after the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), which is responsible for implementing sanctions in the country, asked him to initiate criminal proceedings.
Attorney General Linda von Burg noted that while SECO is responsible for enforcing sanctions, the Attorney General can initiate criminal proceedings “if the seriousness of the offense justifies such a step.”
SECO also asked the Attorney General to initiate criminal proceedings against another company for similar reasons, but the Attorney General rejected this request, ruling that it was not a “particularly significant case.”
Lawyers call the decision a “turning point” in the application of sanctions in Switzerland.
As already written, the number of individuals and companies sanctioned in the Russian Federation exceeds 6,000. At the same time, Western countries increasingly began to impose sanctions against companies from third countries suspected of violating strict measures against the Russian Federation.
