He lost his right to any government assistance.
Scottish resident 76-year-old Daniel Millar won a jackpot of more than $100 thousand in September 2017. However, winning turned out to be a real curse for him, writes The Sun.
The pensioner did not tell the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) about his winnings and was receiving some government benefits at the time. In particular, unemployment benefits, housing subsidies and discounts on utility taxes.
“I didn’t know I had to report the winnings to the DWP, so I spent all the money: I gave some to my two sons and daughter, paid for two family holidays, fixed up my house and bought new clothes for myself and myself. husband,” said the pensioner.
Two months later, Millar spent the entire jackpot, and in December he received a letter from the DWP requesting a meeting, where it emerged that the tax office had reported the unexpected appearance of $100,000 in his account. So he lost his right to any government assistance.
“My only income now is a pension and a personal allowance of £350 a month. As I have to pay full rent and council tax, there is hardly any money left to live on,” the man added.
The couple tried to challenge the DWP’s decision, but their appeal was rejected.
“In the documents they wrote about a change in circumstances, but did not specify what it means. We just don’t know what to do,” said the pensioner’s wife.
We remind you that earlier in the USA, a seller accidentally tore up a lottery ticket with a jackpot of 500 thousand dollars.
