The parties held border negotiations. There is no talk of closing it, Ukraine’s trade representative said.
Representatives of Ukraine and Poland held talks on the border situation, where a complete stoppage of trade was discussed. Trade Representative of Ukraine Taras Kachka announced this on Facebook on Wednesday, February 28.
The official met with Poland’s Minister of Development and Technology, Krzysztof Getman, and the Minister of Agriculture, Czeslaw Sekierski. The negotiations lasted for four hours.
“We have found a common language and are working on a constructive solution on how to unblock the border and take into account the interests of farmers in Poland and Ukraine. It is not easy, but it is possible,” said Kaczka.
According to him, Prime Minister Denis Shmygal’s proposals regarding unblocking the border are important to build mutual understanding.
“During the entire four hours of negotiations, the option of closing the border was not mentioned. As Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said, it would be a very painful decision for our economies,” said the representative of Ukrainian trade.
Kachka emphasized that stopping trade, which is worth $11.7 billion in annual terms, even for one day, is “too painful,” and this is not to mention transit.
We remind you that Polish farmers have been blocking the Ukrainian border for several weeks. They do not allow trucks to pass through the checkpoint, and also destroy Ukrainian agricultural products.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Poland may temporarily close its border with Ukraine completely, ending bilateral trade.
