More coal in Germany to avoid gas

The German government will use more coal to secure its energy supply. “To reduce gas consumption, we need to use less gas to generate electricity. It is said in the message of the Ministry of Economy. Instead, coal-fired power plants should be used more. »

The announcement comes in the wake of last week’s cut in gas supplies by Russian Gazprom to put pressure on Europeans in the context of the Russian-led war in Ukraine.

This is a big step forward for the German government, which had ambitions to phase out coal by 2030. The German carbon footprint is one of the worst in Europe because of its significant use of coal. As a result, it will only get worse. The decision to use more coal should have been more difficult for the Minister of Economy Robert Habek, who comes from the Green Party. “It is bitter, but it is necessary to reduce gas consumption.”– in the same press release he mentioned with pain.

This Sunday, besides coal, other events have been announced. Thus, an auction system for the sale of gas to producers will be created in order to reduce the use of gas here again. And loans from the state bank KfW will be provided to ensure the filling of the country’s gas reservoirs. Among these events: “Security of supply is guaranteed.”greeted Robert Habek, at the same time emphasizing that “The situation is serious”. Germany continues to import almost 35% of its gas from Russia. Until February, this ratio was 55%.
