Austria restarts coal-fired power plant to predict Russian gas shortages

Faced with declining Russian gas supplies, the Austrian government on Sunday evening announced the reopening of a non-exploitable coal-fired power plant to make up for a possible shortfall.

The country’s main electricity supplier with the Verbund Group “An agreement has been reached to restart the thermal power plant.” is located in Mellakh (south), which is currently stopped, the Chancellor said in a press release issued after the crisis meeting.

Security measure

The goal is “That it can again generate electricity from coal in case of emergency.” The process is expected to take several months, according to the Ministry of Nature Protection.

The Melach site, the last coal-fired power plant in Austria, was closed in the spring of 2020 as part of the government’s desire to eliminate this polluting energy source and produce 100% of its electricity from renewable sources. 2030

“Our primary goal is to ensure the country’s supply.”80% of whose gas comes from Russia, justified Conservative Chancellor Carl Nehammer, who rules with the Greens. “It is about replacing the missing Russian gas with other sources or suppliers so that we can continue to accumulate reserves.”.
