Russia’s war against Ukraine has destroyed several important industrial assets and stripped the country’s wealthiest people of their former influence. This was stated in an article by the American newspaper The New York Times, published on Monday, January 15.
“The war, which destroyed Ukrainian industry, limited the power of the so-called oligarchs, tycoons who had long dominated the economy and used their wealth to buy political influence,” the article said.
The richest people in the country lost tens of billions of dollars. Rinat Akhmetov was the hardest hit, losing two metallurgical plants in Mariupol, a coke plant in Avdeevka, and a number of wind and thermal power plants. Currently, its key assets are constantly being targeted by Russian missiles and drones.
“In the first year of the war, the combined wealth of the 20 richest Ukrainians fell by more than $20 billion, according to Forbes magazine. Mr. Akhmetov took the biggest hit, losing more than $9 billion. He was one of two only billionaire. left in Ukraine, from 10 to war,” the newspaper wrote.
