The Black Sea Initiative is a system that guarantees the safety of ships entering or leaving, the UN said.
The Black Sea grain export corridor, independently secured by Ukraine, is not permanent or even intended. The spokesperson of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Saviano Abreu, stated this in an interview with Ukrinform.
“The problem with these alternatives is that they are still not permanent or even predictable. The Black Sea Initiative is a system that guarantees the safety of ships entering or leaving. Unfortunately, after its termination, we see again the increasing mine contamination in the Black Sea. And we saw the level of attack on Ukrainian ports, including the Danube River, which could be an alternative,” he said.
Abreu emphasized that the decision of the Russian Federation to leave the grain corridor has “terrible consequences for Ukraine and the world” – due to the inability to export at the same level for the farmers of Ukrainian and the increase in food prices around the world.
He also noted that the UN is looking for solutions to ensure safe, secure and sustainable civil navigation in the Black Sea.
Let’s recall that in August 2023, the Ukrainian Navy announced new temporary routes for the movement of civilian ships to/from Black Sea ports after the termination of the grain agreement involving the UN, Turkey and Russia in July. After that, the Russian army began to actively build ports in the Odessa region.
