The position of the new Polish government regarding trade problems with Ukraine has changed a little, the head of the Polish Ministry of Agriculture said.
Poland opposes trade concessions with Ukraine. This was stated in a letter from Polish Minister of Agriculture Czeslaw Sekierski to the European Commissioner for Trade, reports radio station RMF FM.
The official emphasized that the position of the new Polish government regarding trade problems with Ukraine has changed slightly.
Sekierski believes that problems with excessive imports arise “not only in the corn, wheat and canola sectors, but also in the sugar, poultry, egg, berry (especially frozen raspberry) or apple concentrates.”
He added that the elimination of quotas for sugar in Ukraine “caused an increase in its imports to the EU in the 2022/2023 season by 20 times compared to the amount of quotas established in the Association Agreement between Ukraine and EU.”
“The immediate liberalization of imports does not contribute much to the economy of Ukraine, but to increasing the income of a small group of oligarchs, who often locate their capital outside of Ukraine,” convinced the minister of Poland and proposed to move to a gradual mutual. liberalization of markets between Ukraine and the EU.
The Government of Law and Justice withdrew from this Platform in protest against the fact that the European Commission did not extend the EU embargo on Ukrainian grain.
Sekerski also expressed his willingness to meet with European Commissioner for Trade Valdis Dombrovskis.
Let’s recall that the previous Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmitry Kuleba, said that Ukraine will intensify relations with the new Polish government to resolve problematic bilateral issues.
Meanwhile, the European Commissioner from Poland threatened to block Ukraine’s duty-free trade with the EU.
